    Overview

When people ask for a migration

Most of the risk in a WordPress move is not the copying. It is everything around it: DNS records, email, old URLs that must redirect, the old site still being indexed and forms that silently stop working. I work through these in a fixed order, with your old site kept running until the new one is proven.

I do migrations as a one-off job, or as part of an ongoing maintenance plan. You get a written checklist of what was moved, what was tested and what to watch afterwards.

    • A slow or unreliable host

Pages take seconds to load or the site goes down. A better host and a clean move often fix speed without a rebuild.

    • A new domain or rebrand

Changing the address needs careful redirects so old links and Google rankings carry over.

    • A site built on a staging copy

Developing in private and then going live on the real domain, with URLs, SSL and settings switched safely.

    • A store on another platform

Moving products, customers and order history into WooCommerce from Shopify or Wix; see the WooCommerce service.

    What is included

    What a migration covers

    • Full backup of files and database, stored off the server before anything changes
    • Transfer to the new host or domain on a temporary address, tested before DNS changes
    • Safe URL updates, including serialised data in widgets and plugin settings
    • DNS switch with a rollback plan, and checks that email records survive
    • SSL certificate set up before traffic moves, with HTTPS enforced
    • 301 redirects for any URL that changed
    • Post-move checklist: forms, checkout, login, permalinks, speed and Search Console
    The move, step by step

What happens before, during and after the move

Most of the risk is around the copy, not in it. This is the order I work in.

    • Before

      Plan and protect

      • Full backup stored off the server
      • DNS and email records written down
      • URL map for anything that will change
    • During

      Copy, test, switch

      • Working copy tested on a temporary address
      • SSL set up before traffic moves
      • DNS switched with a rollback plan
    • After

      Verify and clean up

      • Forms, checkout, login and permalinks checked
      • 301 redirects and Search Console watched
      • Old install retired so there is no duplicate content
    Process

    How a migration runs

    1. 1

      Review and quote

I look at the current site, host and DNS setup, flag risks such as email or a store, and give you a clear quote.

    2. 2

      Back up and copy

I take a full backup, build a working copy on the new host and test it on a temporary address while your live site keeps running.

    3. 3

      Switch and verify

I lower DNS timing in advance, point the domain across, enable SSL and redirects, then run the full checklist.

    4. 4

      Monitor and clean up

I watch for crawl errors and broken pages for a few days, then retire the old install so Google does not see duplicate content.

    Quote

Affordable WordPress migration, quoted per site

The price depends on the size of the site and what is moving with it, so you get a written quote before any work starts.

Migration is quoted per site because the work depends on the size of the site, the hosts involved and whether the domain, email or a store are changing. Send me the current host, the new host (if chosen) and the site address, and I will reply within 24 hours with a clear quote. A migration can also be part of a monthly maintenance plan.

    How I protect your rankings

The two most common ranking killers after a move are missing redirects for URLs that changed, and leaving the old site publicly reachable so Google sees duplicate content. Both are avoided by planning the URL map up front and retiring the old copy once DNS has settled.

If the move is part of a larger change, such as a new design or domain, I can check titles, descriptions and key pages before and after so nothing important disappears.

Related: speed and maintenance after the move

A move is a good time to fix speed, since the new host and a clean setup often change load time more than any plugin. If you want ongoing updates, backups and monitoring after the move, the maintenance plans start at $59 a month and are month-to-month.
