What a small business website costs in the USA in 2026: freelancer, agency and DIY price ranges, hidden running costs, and how to avoid overpaying.

If you search for what a small business website costs in the USA, you will see answers from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. Both ends are real. The difference is who builds it, how custom it is, and what is included after launch.

This guide gives typical ranges, explains what moves the price, and shows where small businesses most often overpay. Market ranges are guides, not quotes: they vary by city, developer and scope. My own prices are listed further down.

The three ways to get a small business website

    1. Do it yourself

Website builders and DIY WordPress cost roughly $100 to $400 a year for hosting, a domain and a template or plugins. The real cost is your time, often 20 to 60 hours, and the result usually needs more speed and SEO work than people expect.

    2. A freelance web developer

Freelancers typically charge from under $100 for a very simple page up to a few thousand dollars for a custom business site. You deal with the person who builds the site, and there is little overhead. This suits most local and small businesses. My own guide on how to hire a freelance web developer covers what to check first.

    3. A web design agency

Agencies in the USA commonly quote several thousand dollars and up, because the price covers a team, project management and overhead. That can be right for a large or complex project. For a five to eight page business site it is often more than you need.

    What changes the price

    • Number of pages. A one-page landing site and a twelve-page site with a blog are different jobs.
    • Custom design or a configured template. Fully custom layouts take more time.
    • Online selling. Products, payments, shipping rules and sales tax add real work.
    • Content. Writing, photography and logo design are separate from the build unless a quote says otherwise.
    • Features. Booking, memberships, quotes and integrations with your CRM or accounting tools.
    • Deadline. Rush work costs more.

    The costs people forget

The build is only part of the cost. Plan for these as well:

    • Domain: about $10 to $20 a year.
    • Hosting: from roughly $5 to $30 a month for a good WordPress host.
    • Premium plugins or a page builder licence: sometimes included by your developer, sometimes extra.
    • Maintenance: updates, backups and security. You can do this yourself, or use a plan such as WordPress maintenance from $59 a month.
    • Sales tax and payment fees if you sell online. These are not website costs, but they affect your budget.

    What I charge

I am a freelance developer, and my prices are written down before work starts:

    • A one-page site: $349.
    • A small business site of up to six pages: $690.
    • A fuller business site with a blog: $990.
    • A WooCommerce store: from $690, growing with products and features.

Hosting and a domain are separate. All WordPress packages include revision rounds during development. The full list is on the WordPress website design page, and the small business web design page explains the process.

    How to avoid overpaying

    1. Get a clear quote in writing. Include what is and is not covered.
    2. Own your assets. The domain, hosting account and files should be in your name.
    3. Ask about the running costs. Some quotes hide monthly hosting or "care plans" you cannot cancel.
    4. Do not pay for pages you will not use. Five to eight good pages beat thirty thin ones.
    5. Check speed on real sites. Ask for links to live projects and test them on a phone. My case studies show real projects.
A $5,000 website is not automatically better than a $500 one. The better site is the one that loads fast, is easy to use on a phone and brings you enquiries.

    Where to start

Write down what you sell, who buys it and what you want visitors to do. Gather your logo, photos and any text. Then ask two or three people for a clear quote on the same brief and compare what is included, not only the price.

If you already have a site and are unsure what is wrong with it, run the free website audit. When you are ready to talk about a new site, send me a short brief and I will reply with a clear quote within 24 hours.
