Wix and Squarespace are website builders: you pay one company a monthly fee and get tools, hosting and support in one box. WordPress is open-source software you install on hosting you choose. The right pick depends on how much control you need, how fast you want to launch and who will look after the site.
| Topic | Wix | Squarespace | WordPress |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software | Included in the plan | Included in the plan | Free |
| Typical plan prices (billed annually) | About $17 (Light), $29 (Core), $39 (Business) up to $159 a month | About $16 to $23 a month for entry plans, $99 at the top | Not applicable |
| Hosting | Included | Included | Separate, from a few dollars to more for busy sites |
| Themes and add-ons | Apps in a store, some paid | Extensions, some paid | Many free; premium plugins and themes paid |
| Build help | DIY, or a Wix expert | DIY, or a Squarespace expert | DIY or a WordPress developer |
Builders look cheapest in month one. WordPress looks cheapest on paper because the software is free, but you pay for hosting and either your time or a developer. Over a year or two the totals are often closer than the headline prices suggest. For a developer-built site, see what a small business website costs in the USA.
WordPress code and content are yours; you can change host or developer without rebuilding. Wix and Squarespace keep your site on their platform. You can usually export some content, but the design and layout do not move as a working site. Check the current terms of each builder before you commit, because export options change. This is the main reason owners move to WordPress later, and when they do, a careful WordPress migration keeps their URLs and content intact.
Every platform can rank. The difference is control. On WordPress you can edit page titles, URLs, redirects, structured data, speed and technical settings in as much detail as you like, usually with an SEO plugin. Builders cover the basics and are improving, but some settings are fixed, and you cannot change the server. If search is a main source of customers, that extra control matters. Good titles, useful content and a fast site matter more than the platform, so see the SEO service if rankings are the goal.
Builders handle updates, security and hosting for you, which is a real benefit if you do not want to think about them. WordPress needs updates, backups and security checks. That can be done by you or a maintenance plan, and the monthly cost is covered in how much website maintenance costs. Speed depends on your choices on any platform: heavy images and many plugins slow WordPress, and heavy design and scripts slow builders.
A small brochure site rarely hits the limits of a builder. A site that adds a blog, a shop, bookings, a members area or a custom integration often does. WordPress has the largest range of plugins and developers, so you are rarely stuck. Builders have app stores, but you are limited to what the platform allows.
If you are on Wix or Squarespace and have outgrown it, or you are starting fresh and want WordPress built properly, my WordPress development service covers both, and you can ask for a quote. I will tell you honestly if a builder is the better choice for what you need.
