    For a UK small business, a WordPress website from a freelancer usually costs between about £500 and £6,000. The spread is wide because "a website" can mean a five-page template site or a bespoke build with bookings, a shop and custom design. This guide shows what drives the price and gives real published examples so you can judge a quote.

    A cost calculator that draws on hundreds of quotes puts UK freelance work at about £1,100 to £4,600, and agencies at roughly twice a freelancer. Treat these as a guide, not a quote.

    Real published UK examples

    • A UK studio lists sites from £500 for up to 5 pages.
    • Another lists £499 plus VAT.
    • A further UK agency lists £999 for up to 5 pages.
    • One agency lists a template site up to 10 pages from £500 plus VAT and a bespoke site up to 20 pages from £1,500 plus VAT.
    • A WordPress freelancer lists a base build of £1,199 and £1,399 for ecommerce, ex VAT.

    Sources warn that prices under about £300 usually mean a bare template with weak speed and SEO, and that very cheap "£49 a month" website plans often mean you do not own the site.

    What drives the price

    1. Number of pages. The simplest way packages are tiered.
    2. Design. Template with your branding is cheaper than custom design.
    3. Features. Booking, memberships, multilingual, shop and integrations all add time.
    4. Content. Writing, photography and logo work are often extra.
    5. SEO and speed. Real optimisation takes time. Ask what is included.
    6. Who builds it. Hourly rates in the UK are about £55 to £90 for a freelancer.

    VAT

    Quotes from VAT-registered developers add 20% VAT on top. Many UK prices are shown ex VAT, so £1,500 plus VAT is £1,800. If you are VAT-registered yourself you can usually reclaim it. Always ask whether a quote includes VAT.

    What the quote should not forget

    • Hosting and domain are separate and recurring. Ask whether the developer provides them in your name.
    • Premium plugins or themes, often yearly licences.
    • Maintenance: updates, backups and security. See what maintenance costs.
    • Extra revision rounds after the included ones.
    • Content you were expecting them to write.

    How to compare quotes
